What is Data Availability Layer?

The Data Availability Layer (DAL) serves as a cornerstone in the architecture of blockchain and decentralized networks. What does 0G DA provides?

0G DA’s Architecture

The 0G ecosystem is composed of three primary components:

  • 0G Storage: This is the general-purpose data system managed by Storage Nodes.
  • 0G DA: This is the data availability system built atop 0G Storage.
  • 0G Consensus: This is 0G’s consensus network.

The architecture is depicted as follows:

The confirmation of data availability hinges on two workflows:

  1. The Data Publishing Lane: This ensures data availability.
  2. The Data Storage Lane: This facilitates large data transfers to 0G Storage.

The Data Publishing Lane plays a pivotal role in 0G’s data availability property. It operates by having the consensus network verify the aggregated signatures of the corresponding Storage Nodes. This implies that 0G’s Storage Nodes must reliably certify that the data genuinely exists in 0G Storage, a fact which is verified by 0G’s consensus network.

This process is extremely efficient, as the Data Publishing Lane only requires a minuscule amount of data flowing through the consensus protocol to avoid any bottlenecks.

0G adopts a similar approach to EigenDA, wherein an “honest majority” of a group of selected Storage Nodes must concur that the data is accurate (in return for mining rewards). Unlike EigenDA, a Verifiable Random Function (VRF) is used to randomly select Storage Nodes to circumvent any potential for collusion.

0G Consensus can then swiftly verify data availability, at a rate 1,000x faster than Ethereum’s danksharding and 4x faster than Solana’s FireDancer.

Unparalleled Scalability with 0G DA

The 0G Consensus architecture allows for any number of networks to operate concurrently, all validated by the same set of validators. Whether there are 5 or 5,000 consensus networks, they are efficiently managed through a process called shared staking.

Validators stake their assets on a primary network, typically Ethereum. Any slashable event on any network triggers a slashing on the main network. Validators earn incentives on the networks they validate and can convert these tokens to the main chain by burning them.

As the 0G ecosystem expands, new consensus networks can be seamlessly integrated, providing infinite scalability for the system.
