What is Somnia?
Somnia is a Layer 1 blockchain focused on enabling next-generation gaming and metaverse applications. According to the team, the project’s MVP (minimum viable product) is capable of reaching up to 1,000,000 TPS with over 100 active nodes.

Currently in its testnet phase, Somnia is running community campaigns to encourage user participation – laying the groundwork for future airdrop eligibility.
Somnia’s Architecture
To achieve such high throughput, Somnia’s model is built on three core innovations: MultiStream, bytecode compilation, and ICEdb.
MultiStream is a new consensus mechanism developed by Somnia that separates data production from consensus processing – enhancing scalability and parallel execution.
In traditional blockchain consensus models, each block must wait for the previous one to reach consensus before proceeding. This sequential structure becomes a bottleneck as user activity increases.
MultiStream tackles this by allowing validators to create blocks independently and in parallel, without waiting for the previous block to finalize. A separate consensus chain then handles the validation and reordering of these blocks.
This approach allows Somnia to maintain high throughput without compromising network security or consistency. MultiStream operates through two key components:
- Datachain: Each validator runs a dedicated blockchain called a Datachain, where blocks are generated independently – bypassing the need for cross-validator coordination. This reduces congestion and accelerates execution.
- ConsensusChain: This chain is responsible for global network consensus. It builds blocks using the headers from all Datachains.
*A header contains metadata such as hash, timestamp, and the identity of the validating node.

Somnia is also fully EVM-compatible, making it developer- and user-friendly. However, unlike standard EVM chains, Somnia goes a step further by compiling EVM bytecode into native CPU-optimized code.
For context, smart contracts on other EVM chains are compiled into bytecode like 0x6000356..., which limits performance and scalability.
By converting this bytecode into native instructions, Somnia enhances performance, especially under high user load conditions.
Additionally, Somnia has developed its own data storage infrastructure through a custom-built database called ICEdb.
Efficient data access is critical to blockchain performance, and instead of relying on generic solutions, Somnia built its own. ICEdb is tailored for high-speed environments. According to the team, read/write operations can be completed in just 70–100 nanoseconds. This ultra-fast data layer helps maintain low latency and supports high-volume, real-time applications such as on-chain games and AI services.
